While suicide is a serious public health issue, it can be prevented through timely, evidence-based, and often low-cost interventions, including early identification of risk factors, proper assessment, management, and follow-up of individuals exhibiting suicidal behavior.
A key strategy for suicide prevention is to understand its root causes and implement targeted preventive measures for specific populations. This can be done by reviewing suicide cases. Data from police inquests and medico-legal autopsies play a crucial role in determining the national suicide death rate. This continuing medical education (CME) session on “Suicide Prevention, Data Management, and Forensic Investigation” aims to bridge the gap between data collected from medico-legal investigations and efforts to create nationally representative statistics.
We have invited Dr. Kedar Marahatta, Mental Health Expert from WHO Nepal, to discuss the importance of generating and analyzing data on suicide in Nepal, and to outline prevention strategies. Likewise, Dr. Srijana Kunwar, a forensic expert from Patan Academy of Health Sciences, will explain the current procedures for medico-legal investigation of suicide cases and present available data from law enforcement agencies and forensic professionals conducting autopsies.
We warmly invite all members of the Medico Legal Society of Nepal to attend this CME program, where we can collectively learn and exchange insights on this crucial topic.
